MEET THE TEAM

EMILIA WONG GORDON, DVM, DABVPÂ (SHELTER MEDICINE PRACTICE)
Shelter Veterinary Consultant
Dr. Emilia Wong Gordon (she/her) received her DVM from the University of California, Davis in 2005 and obtained specialty board certification in Shelter Medicine Practice through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 2020. Her early experiences in animal shelters working with animals who were surrendered due to the life circumstances of their human families have driven her career direction and inspired her to launch Haven Veterinary Services. Dr. Gordon’s professional and research interests include infectious disease, animal welfare epidemiology, and feline behaviour and welfare. She lectures on shelter topics at several universities in Western Canada and holds adjunct faculty positions with the University of Florida Shelter Medicine Distance Education Program and the Ontario Veterinary College.

WESLEY CHEUNG, DVM
Shelter Veterinary Consultant
Dr. Wesley Cheung (he/him) began his veterinary career in 2017 as a general practitioner in Australia, later completing an emergency and critical care internship and working as an emergency veterinarian. With early ties to animal shelters—and fond memories of fundraising with a rusty donation box—he began volunteering regularly at his local shelter. This passion led him to pursue a shelter medicine internship at Cornell University, followed by a position at Toronto Humane Society. In 2025, he completed a 3-year residency in community and shelter medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College, where he lectured on shelter topics, taught clinical skills, and provided consultation services to shelters, sanctuaries, and rescues across North America. Outside of work, Dr. Cheung’s interests include talking about sociolinguistics and expanding his family of shelter cats.

MANDI IDLE, RVT
Manager, Patient Care
Mandi (she/her) has been working in the shelter medicine field as an RVT since she graduated from tech school at Douglas College in 2013. Prior to being an RVT she volunteered with a cat clinic where she learned about appropriate low stress feline handling and considerations. Her love and dedication to improving the experience of medical care for all animals grew from there. She is the co-founder and board member of the Association of Shelter Medicine Veterinary Technicians (ASMVT) and is actively working towards the creation of a shelter medicine specialty for RVTs. Her main areas of interest are in low stress handling, biosecurity and all things ringworm!
